MEET THE FOUNDER
Hi, I’m Shailja, the founder of Ukigo, and this brand began with a personal gap I experienced as a traveller.
While planning my own trips to Singapore and Thailand, I struggled to find a travel advisor I could genuinely trust. Everything felt transactional—there was little personalisation and no real effort to understand what kind of trip I wanted. That experience stayed with me.
Being originally from Darjeeling, I noticed something interesting over the years. Whether I was living in Kolkata or later after I got married, friends and family would naturally turn to me for travel advice, simply because I was “from the hills.” It made me realise that even in a digital-first world, people still seek human guidance when it comes to travel, especially families.
That realisation slowly shaped a direction. In April 2023, with the support of my brother Lalit, I decided to turn this instinct for curation into something more intentional. After months of research and learning, we began designing international trips to nearby, well-loved destinations like Bhutan, Thailand, and Vietnam, keeping trust and simplicity at the centre.
We don’t see ourselves as agents, but as travel advisors, working closely with families and couples who value thoughtful planning. The name Ukigo, inspired by the Japanese word Ukiyo, reflects our belief that travel should feel light, effortless, and meaningful.
